Marzabotto in the valley of Reno is unfortunately famous for the massacre of Monte Sole, a World War II war crime consisting in a mass murder of civilians by the Nazi-Fascists.
In reprisal for attacks on German soldiers by partisans and the Resistance between 29 September and 5 October 1944 a Waffen SS division was ordered to systematically kill hundreds of people in Marzabotto. They also killed numerous residents of the adjacent Grizzana Morandi and Monzuno, in the area of the massif of Monte Sole.
It was the deadliest mass shooting in the modern day’s history of Italy.
Since 2018 there is a mural-festival in Marzabotto, PENNELLI RIBELLI born to create a discussion about this terrible events.
